A Perfect Addition To Hygge Decor: Stoneware Ceramics

“Life is just like potter’s clay – it gets shaped by your own hands.”

What Is Stoneware?

Stoneware is porous, dense pottery that has been fired at high temperatures to make it impervious to liquids. Despite being constructed of clay, it is more resilient than conventional pottery and earthenware. Stone-like characteristics give stoneware its name. Today, you can still find it in luxury ceramicwares used for hygge decors like a tea set, crocks, and coffee cups.

Stoneware is a robust, hard, and impermeable material. It can be used as a baking dish or a personalized trophy. It is strong, stylish, and adaptable. For instance, under the correct circumstances, it can withstand heat from a microwave, dishwasher, or even an oven. Stoneware is ideal for sipping coffee or tea because it absorbs and distributes heat more evenly than other varieties of pottery.

How Is Stoneware Produced?

Despite the fact that stoneware has been produced for thousands of years, technology has made it possible for potters to produce it more quickly and simply than ever. Today, there are three basic ways to make stoneware. These are Molding, Slipcasting, and Handcrafting.

  1. MOLDING
hygge decor

Molding is the process of putting clay into a mold before firing it for stoneware. Similar procedures are used by manufacturers to mass-produce products like plastics.
Manufacturers build a mold with a hollow section in the shape of the finished product to create mugs, steins, and other stoneware products using this procedure. Slip, a fluid mixture of clay and water is poured into the hole and solidifies around the mold’s edge.

2. SLIPCASTING

Slipcasting entails putting liquid clay into a mold and allowing it to be set up inside to create a cast. Slipcasting, as opposed to other techniques, enables potters to make more complex shapes that are difficult to produce in large quantities on a pottery wheel. Once in the mold, the clay solidifies and creates a hollow cast before it can maintain its shape. Depending on the climate, this can take hours to finish.

3. WHEEL THROWING

The beginning of the process, when the potter literally throws a lump of clay onto the pottery wheel, is where the term “wheel-throwing” originates. The potter then puts the clay in the center of the wheel and molds it into the desired shape using water and moist hands.

5 Fantastic Pottery Facts You Probably Didn’t Know!

  1. Ceramics mature at temperatures between 900 and 1350 degrees Celsius. That is as hot as lava.
  2. Pottery and ceramics are the same things. Clay is the primary component of ceramics, and pottery is the art of shaping clay by hand.
  3. Clay never deteriorates and can be reprocessed indefinitely. In fact, it improves with time.
  4. The oldest piece of pottery that is known to exist is nearly 25,000 years old, whereas the potter’s wheel is just 6,000 years old.
  5. To make ceramics usable and waterproof, they must all be fired to their maturation temperature. Tomatoes should be dried in the sun.

One of the strongest ceramic material types is Stoneware Ceramic. The clay and glaze that were utilized during production greatly influence how quickly it will chip. During a fire, the glaze and clay should expand and shrink at roughly the same rates. If not, the glaze may be shrinking and be more prone to chipping. Stoneware is no more likely to chip than any other sort of pottery, all other things being equal.

Stoneware can break rather easily when dropped on a hard surface, such as floor tiles like other ceramic materials can. A cup or bowl can be used by many generations if it is not subjected to unexpected impacts since it will survive forever.

Ceramics feels like a vacation, and it’s one that you can bring home, too! Why are you holding out? Grab a piece of luxury dinnerware from Freeson Ceramics to complete your kitchen’s hygge decor.
